Brass shield boss depicting a lion 1st to 2nd century AD

The markings under the lions mouth tell us that the original shield was owned by a Turma cavalryman. It would have been made in around the 1st to 2nd century AD and cast in bronze. This shield boss was an incredibly rare find, the shape of the lion would be a fierce image to come across in battle.
